To promote whole-person development and life-long learning, TWIS is dedicated to supporting students to attain balanced development. We help students excel academically as well as develop social and emotional skills to prepare them for the everchanging world of the 21st century.
The TWIS Counseling Office is a place to meet students’ developmental needs, supporting them to be socially and emotionally competent so that they are more capable to regulate their own emotions and behavior, solve problems, and communicate effectively. And what’s more, these skills serve as the foundation of success both in and beyond the classroom.
See how Ms. Carmen Wu, our school counselor, explains how students in TWIS can flourish and grow with a positive perspective.

What is your role at TWIS?
As a school counselor in TWIS, I help students to develop social-emotional skills that are essential for a successful future. My job is aligned with the IB curriculum which focuses on the Approaches to Learning Skills (ATL), specifically the Self-Management - affective skills. I put a lot of effort in equipping students with the ability to manage their state of mind, like practicing strategies to overcome distractions, manage emotions, positive thinking and deal with failures.
I also work closely with teachers and parents to identify and discuss individual students’ needs. Collaboration with parents is important for us to provide comprehensive support for students’ growth and development. So I directly communicate with parents about the observed behavior of their child, to discuss and provide purposeful feedback, and to keep regular contact with them regarding the behavior performance of their child.
What is your typical day at school like?
I always start my day with a daily plan when I arrive in the office. I participate in one session in class to help students with special needs to adjust their study behavior in class. After exchanging opinions with homeroom teachers and giving advice to them, I need to record it down in a daily report.
For MYP students, I regularly help them to acquire affective skills through different kinds of activities during the MYP core class.
I also enjoy spending recess time with students, chatting with them. It is a good opportunity to get to know each other better and build mutual trust and respect with students.
In the afternoon, you will find me doing one-to-one private counseling to students in my office.
Lastly, if any crisis or accident happens on the campus that requires me to give students emotional support, I will be right there!
How can students learn and benefit from social-emotional counseling?

Thanks to TWIS Virtual School, we can continue the class with students online. According to current circumstances, I come up with different topics to support students’ needs. Firstly, teaching students goal setting to help them get motivated. Secondly, practicing mindfulness to reduce anxiety when they cannot go out. Thirdly, I will teach them how to develop positive attitudes towards study.
On the other hand, even though we cannot meet at school, I still keep in touch with teachers and parents. I need to understand what they observe during the virtual classes and how students are doing during this period. Depending on the situation, I make phone calls, text, or do video conferences with parents. Staying in contact with parents to keep track of students’ progress and to give them emotional support during this critical moment. I regularly update the principal of the work I do with all stakeholders.
