Reading – 3 is the magic number
As part of Literacy Week, K1 – P1 parents were invited to attend a reading focused coffee morning hosted by Ms McNamee, Ms Packman and Ms Wadley. During this session, parents were given an insight into the three steps to reading: understanding print, understanding language and understanding how the world works. When an understanding of the world, language and print act together as a team, reading happens. All three go hand in hand. One of the best ways we can support our children daily is to provide opportunities for them to experience print and language through conversations with others, songs, rhymes and of course books. Words are essential in building the thought connections in the brain and the more language a child experiences, the more advantaged they will be. Experts believe that children need to hear a thousand stories read aloud before they begin to learn to read themselves. A thousand! Although this number sounds daunting, parents were quite surprised how easily this can be achieved in just one year by reading three stories a day: one favourite, one familiar and one new. Towards the end of the session, parents explored a variety of ‘reading stations’ set up to help support children with their reading at home. These included setting up a bedtime routine to read together, creating a ‘writer’s corner’ at home and completing reading responses to develop children's thoughts and comprehension.

作為語言文化周的一部分,幼兒園及小學低段校長帕克曼女士,英語學科組長沃德利女士及小學部一年級年級組長麥克內米女士共同主持了本周四的咖啡晨會。本次晨會以閱讀為主題,邀請了幼兒園小班至小學一年級的家長前來參加。在晨會上,三位老師給家長介紹了閱讀“三步法”:讀懂圖案、理解語言、了解世界是如何運作的。這三者相得益彰,形成閱讀的過程。日常生活中,我們可以幫助孩子的最佳方式是為他們提供各式各樣的機會去學習圖案和語言,通過與他人交談、唱歌、讀詩以及閱讀書籍。文字對于在大腦中建立思想之間的關聯(lián)至關重要,而孩子接觸的語言越多,受益越深。專家認為,孩子在學會自己閱讀之前,需要先聽上千個故事。上千個!盡管這個數(shù)字令人望而生畏,但是如果每天閱讀三個故事(一個最喜歡的、一個熟悉的和一個新故事),一年之內就能輕松實現(xiàn)這個目標。在晨會結束之前,家長們參觀了老師精心布置的“閱讀角”,共同探索如何幫助孩子在家中養(yǎng)成良好的閱讀習慣。家長可以嘗試睡前與孩子一起閱讀,在家里布置一個“寫作角”并讓孩子寫讀后感,從而拓展孩子的思維,提高理解能力。
