Principal of Sendelta:John Sun,

美國(guó)頂尖大學(xué)教育管理學(xué)和計(jì)算機(jī)科學(xué)碩士;

John Sun

Dear Sendelta families and friends,

Last week was short but there are many items we should talk about. Firstly I wanted to say that the students performed rather well this week. I took special notice of students and how they use their computer/iPad in the classroom. For most students, it is not a problem and I found that most students are responsible and use their devices for study. On the other hand there were a few students that played games and their device was confiscated. Previously the devices were taken for a few hours and then returned to students. As of last week I have decided that if students are using their devices in the classroom with a teacher present the devices will be held by the school until the following Monday. Students can now have a sense of how important their devices are and can now weigh the consequences of playing games on their devices while in the classroom. As a leader and a role model I must be firm and at the same time offer advice and compassion. I ask the parents for support as we try to find a balance between what students would like and what they can handle.

ECA

I would like to talk about our ECA program. This is a brief list of the competition and what happened last week in ECA.

· National Finals of the Future Scientists;

· American Mathematical Competition;

· First Robotics Competition;

· American Debate;

· Technology&Creation;

· San Mao Orchestra keeps practicing under the guidance of a teacher;

· The Dear Stranger Club conducted a week of community-integration experiments, with two themes “Campus Suggestion and the Mid-Autumn Festival, very popular to the students;

· The Aviation Club has completed the assembly and is to conduct a test flight next week;

· The Music Production Club has formed a personal radio station;

· The Tennis Club has arranged the venue to start practicing.

Student Union

The student union is an integral part of how the school is managed. Taking an active part in student’s rights and bringing students together and giving voice to concerns and promoting positive change. I want to take a moment and congratulate the new leaders of the students union.

The selections have been made for the positions of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Director General, minister of associations, minister of outreach, minister of culture, and minister of information. These positions are very important and I would like to congratulate everyone on a successful election.

Principal’s note:

I want to also take a moment and make a few suggestions for the students looking to apply for university this year. To get into your ideal course at your ideal institution, an international student needs more than good grades (although they certainly don’t hurt). The people in charge of reviewing university applications will sift through hundreds – sometimes thousands – of personal statements, so it’s important to make yours stand out. So how do you create a high-quality personal statement that makes you the obvious choice for your institution? Your academic achievements should comprise about 70 percent of your overall statement. That leaves 30 percent to demonstrate who you are outside of the classroom. Extracurricular activities are a part of this but “supercurricular” activities – which highlight how you’ve engaged intellectually with your subject area outside school – are even better. With this in mind, here are two key areas to focus on if you want to get into your first choice of university.

Participation and collaboration

Your personal statement should also suggest that you are enthusiastic and willing to participate in your chosen field, not just learn about it.

At Sendelta we will visit museums, exhibitions and other points of interest. If you’re looking to study modern foreign languages, you could go to the country where your chosen language is spoken; if you intend to study architecture, you should visit significant buildings and landmarks. Demonstrate your passion: don’t just tell them about it.

Another easy way to do that is to join a society or club relevant to your prospective degree: law students should join the debating team; Model United Nations is great for students looking to enroll in philosophy, politics, and economics or international relations.

Equally, attending lectures is another way to stand out at the application stage. Find out if your school or college holds talks or research in your local area.

Self-development

Finally, universities want to see that you’re a self-starter. Taking a massive open online course (Mooc) can highlight that you are serious about studying – and will often come with a certificate once you’ve completed it. This small time commitment can improve your personal statement.

Otherwise, consider entering competitions to prove your capability against other students. Take part in a maths olympiad or an essay competition and you’ll stand out from the rest.

For international students, it can often be challenging to complete a personal statement. Getting your English language levels to the required standard and maintaining excellent grades can be challenging enough, without considering the above extracurriculars.

But a higher education institution needs to see that you are committed. Look for ways to participate in your chosen subject area, to collaborate with others and to deepen your own learning and you’ll be rewarded for it.

These are just 2 points.

Sincerely

Executive Principal

John Sun
