Dear Sendelta Community,

Before I begin sharing some insights into what's been happening around campus this past week, I'd like to issue a few important updates.

First, after consulting with our faculty, the Academic Department determined that September 10th was too early to begin issuing the promised monthly Early Warning letters to parents. With only a few data points now entered into their grade books, our teachers believe it would be unfair at this point to judge a student as generally performing well or poorly. Parents that have logged into PowerSchool and seen one or two low marks should therefore not be too concerned at this point. Many of our new students, completely new to the world of American-styled education, might still be in an adjustment period and their performance will improve with time. Our first scheduled Early Warning letters will therefore be released following the National Day holiday on October 10th.

Second, as part of the school's efforts to boost student academic performance, last week the Academic Department began enforcement of supervised self study. All students with scheduled free time during the day will now be monitored in assigned areas by members of our staff. Self study will be time dedicated exclusively to academic work under study conditions which includes quiet rooms, strict control of technology (no games), and a focus on completing homework, reading, or preparing for exams. Students will have access to the school library during these times and are encouraged to continue checking out as many books as they like.

The focus of my sharing last week will be on our teachers' efforts to integrate a variety of activities into their lessons. The goals of these methods are to foster a student-centered learning environment in order to keep students engaged and help them retain knowledge long after they leave the classroom. There is no uniform way to accomplish these goals so I'll share examples from three very different courses.

In Algebra II, Ms. Ren used technology to help encourage her students to demonstrate their mastery of course content. Volunteers went to the white board and solved problems with the cheerful support of their classmates and the guidance of Ms. Ren. This was a fun twist to the traditional learning model of math teachers doing all of the board work for students and a great way to verify whether students were actually understanding the key points or not.

In PE, our teachers are making full use of all the athletic facilities on campus. In Mr. Yurii's class, students were rotated between drills on the basketball court for how to dribble and cardio workouts in the fitness center. His hope is to foster an appreciation for physical fitness in his students by showing them a variety of methods to get exercise and stay healthy.

Students in our Business Foundations course switched roles with Mr. Xia last week, with different groups taking turns leading the class. For their current chapter on entrepreneurship, each group was tasked with making a presentation explaining the personal background and business history of a well-known entrepreneur. Students identified the personal characteristics they believed helped that entrepreneur to succeed.

That's all for last week.
