What do you like most about playing?
I like that I can connect emotionally with the music while I am playing the piano. For example, Chopin’s Ballade No.2 is about people fighting for their own kingdom and when I play it I too feel as if I'm part of the war and experience all the sadness that comes with it.
How do you prepare for a competition?
I practice every day. But I try not to practice more than 5 hours because at that point, I no longer enjoy playing and I am more prone to making more mistakes. Also, if you want to do well in the competition, I found that you must push beyond your expected level to compensate for your nervousness and new surroundings.
What was a big fear or hurdle that you overcame to make it to competitions like this?
I was always afraid that I would play a bunch of wrong notes during the skillful sections of the piece. I was so focused on this fear. But, I overcame this fear by reminding myself to relax and to have my body move during the piece in order to keep myself calm. And by doing that, I was able to play without missing any notes!
What would you say to someone who is playing the piano for the first time and wants to compete at your level?
You might lose interest in playing the piano for a year or two at first (about the 3rd year you learn it) but please don’t give up because anything worth pursuing will take time.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from this event?
I would agree with the saying, no pain, no gain. I practiced really hard and with great intensity during my practice sessions. Because of this commitment to my practices, I was able to be less nervous and increase my confidence.
