Parent involvement in school life is the first step to parent engagement and, ultimately, parent partnership. When parents and teachers work together to establish a thriving learning environment, the effect on the children is profound. Students with engaged parents don’t just have high test scores: their sense of self-worth, their motivation and their confidence rises too.

Parent-teacher relationships are more than an optional classroom benefit. They are key for helping students on a personal and classroom level reach their academic potential. When parents are engaged in their children’s school lives, students have the home support and knowledge they need to not only finish their assignments, but also develop a lifelong love of learning.

With mum and dad gently encouraging their son or daughter to try new things, unexpected enthusiasms and events surface – someone picks up a guitar and resolves to write a song; someone else picks up a pen and determines to be the next Lu Xun.

At Fettes College Guangzhou, we recognise that parental engagement has a large and positive impact on our students’ learning. Indeed, the ‘Fettes Family Parent Partnership Programme’ is a cornerstone of our pastoral care provision and it is heartening to see so many prospective parents embracing the notion of involvement in their son or daughter’s future educational journey with us.
依托家校合作的模式,我們?cè)诩议L(zhǎng)和學(xué)校(比如幼兒園或小學(xué)的班主任,初中、高中年級(jí)的宿舍管理員和導(dǎo)師)之間建立定期的雙向溝通制度,分享我們對(duì)孩子成長(zhǎng)的觀察和看法。
Underpinning the programme is the expectation of a regular two-way flow of relevant information, observations and perceptions between parents and the designated people who oversee the pastoral care of our pupils: the Class Teacher in the Kindergarten or Primary School and the Houseparent and Tutors in the Middle and Senior Schools.

We expect and actively encourage parents to play their part in ensuring that an effective, positive partnership develops, because we know that such engagement has a strong positive impact on pupils’ academic attainment, co-curricular achievement and emotional wellbeing.

As Michael Spens, the former Headmaster of Fettes College and member of the FCG Advisory Board, says: ‘It is very important for the two to work together. We see ourselves as working in partnership with parents and it as an honour and a privilege that parents entrust their children to our care. We take this responsibility extremely seriously and we are committed to do all that we can to ensure that our parents are included in the education and development of their children. We keep parents fully informed on every aspect of their child’s progress. We encourage parents to feel part of all that is happening at school and we make considerable efforts to include parents wherever possible. We value very highly the support that family brings for individual development and we know that the best outcomes for our students are achieved when family and school are working closely together.’
