It is Spring - a time of growth and renewal as well as the season for Heads of Schools to recruit fresh talent to join our BMH Faculty for the coming academic year. Dr Wall and Ms Packman search out the best teachers, with rich experiences, the right expertise and qualifications, glowing references and BMH-aligned values to join us and we are excited about those successful new recruits who will enrich our already exceptional team of teachers in the year ahead. At the same time, we are delighted to have so many BMH experienced teachers who are choosing to renew their contracts and their journey with us, continuing to cultivate our children's futures and our school. This series seeks to learn more about these teachers and explore what inspired them to stay with us at BMH.

個(gè)人簡(jiǎn)介
Ms Cathy Cai has nearly 10 years' experience in teaching Mathematics in Prep Schools. She has experience in guiding students to participate in the mathematical Olympiad and she was rewarded with the accolade of “Excellent Coach" and other such prizes. Ms Cathy Cai joined BMH in 2018; since then she has engaged in deep thinking about the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western mathematical teaching concepts, methods and content. It is her goal that children are able to find both the interest and the beauty in mathematics in a wide range of mathematical learning experiences.

QUESTION1
Q:What inspired you to become an educator? What were the key things that attracted you to BMH?
是什么激勵(lì)你成為了一名教育者?柏朗思觀瀾湖學(xué)校最吸引你的是什么?
Cathy:My journey into the field of education came out of the blue. I tried several jobs after graduation, but I couldn't find pleasure in them. I was offered an opportunity to be a Maths Teacher at a school; I went back to the school campus and saw children quietly reading books. There and then when I looked into the eyes of the children in that class, my heart suddenly settled down. I made my mind to be a teacher. There are many reasons why I decided to join BMH, but what I remember most is that when I first came to the school, the security guard at the school gate went to check my ID and after the HRD gave him the instruction to let me in, he said aloud to me, "Hi, teacher, I wish you to have a successful interview." This blessing deeply touched me, everyone in the school is a member of its community, and the establishment of a united and harmonious community requires efforts from each one of us. People in BMH give blessings to strangers, I suppose it was the warm and caring team which attracted me and brought me here.
選擇教育行業(yè)作為一名老師,是一個(gè)很巧合的機(jī)會(huì),畢業(yè)之后當(dāng)時(shí)做了幾份不同的職業(yè),但內(nèi)心一直找不到工作中的愉悅感,剛好遇到了一個(gè)合適的機(jī)會(huì),去了一所學(xué)校當(dāng)老師,重回校園,再一次聽(tīng)到校園內(nèi)的朗朗書(shū)聲,看到上課時(shí)孩子熠熠生輝的眼睛,心突然就落定了,從那一刻起我就知道這將是我未來(lái)的職業(yè)了。決定加入柏朗思觀瀾湖學(xué)校的原因有很多,但我記憶最深刻的就是在剛來(lái)學(xué)校進(jìn)行初次面試時(shí),校門(mén)口的保安讓我出示了證件以及等人事部核對(duì)了名單讓我進(jìn)來(lái)時(shí),對(duì)我大聲了說(shuō):“老師,祝您面試成功。”這句祝福深深地打動(dòng)了我,學(xué)校里的每個(gè)人都是這個(gè)社區(qū)的一員,團(tuán)結(jié)和諧社區(qū)的建立需要每個(gè)人的努力,我相信即使面對(duì)陌生人也會(huì)給予祝福的人所在的團(tuán)隊(duì)一定一個(gè)和諧的積極向上的吸引我的團(tuán)隊(duì)。

Q:How do you feel about teaching at BMH and living in the community here?
你覺(jué)得在柏朗思觀瀾湖學(xué)校任教及生活在學(xué)校社區(qū)的感受如何?
Cathy:To be honest, I feel full of happiness.Firstly, we have a balanced workload and respectful approach to how we manage our work, if we can't finish a task on time, we always stay late willingly. Secondly, I am lucky to have a wonderful leadership team. The Heads are of great help to me professionally and with team management. When the Maths group was initially set up, Ms Packman spent a lot time with us to discuss the teaching methods and contents. When problems arose in our daily work, Ms Packman was always there to provide suggestion and solution as needed. I would also like to thank all the teachers in the Prep 1. When we meet difficulties at work, we always sit down and work together to find a solution. Therefore, I will feel increasingly comfortable teaching here, and my teamwork is getting better and better. Student assessment and teaching is dynamic and full of game to encourage children. Smaller class allows us to achieve this well. Finally, the integration of different cultures, the tolerance of different world views and values, gives you a broader way of looking at things.

在這里,沒(méi)有所謂的加班文化,在任務(wù)完不成的時(shí)候都會(huì)自己找時(shí)間留下來(lái)完成,但我發(fā)現(xiàn)大家也都在利用其他時(shí)間充實(shí)自我,實(shí)現(xiàn)能力增長(zhǎng)。其次有一個(gè)很好的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)團(tuán)隊(duì),無(wú)論是專業(yè)指導(dǎo)上,還是團(tuán)隊(duì)管理上,校長(zhǎng)都對(duì)我有很大的幫助。在最初組建數(shù)學(xué)組時(shí),帕克曼女士和我們就數(shù)學(xué)組的教學(xué)方法、教學(xué)內(nèi)容和模式進(jìn)行了探討,在老師工作出現(xiàn)問(wèn)題時(shí),也能找她得到及時(shí)的解決;還要特別感謝一年級(jí)組的所有老師,在工作中遇到困難時(shí),我們都能群策群力,將問(wèn)題妥善解決,所以在這里教學(xué)會(huì)感受到越來(lái)越得心應(yīng)手,大家配合得越來(lái)越好。對(duì)于教學(xué),這是讓我感覺(jué)特別輕松但是又愉悅的一個(gè)方面,學(xué)校對(duì)于課堂教學(xué)的評(píng)價(jià)更多樣化,更傾向于游戲化,你可以設(shè)計(jì)更豐富多彩的和各具特色活動(dòng),小班教學(xué)讓這種模式可以成為現(xiàn)實(shí),而外籍教師的分層次教學(xué)更給我們提供了研究對(duì)象和實(shí)踐模板。最后不同文化的交融,不同世界觀和價(jià)值觀的包容,讓我看待問(wèn)題的方式更加廣闊。

Q:What motivated you to renew your contract at BMH?
是什么讓你決定再次與學(xué)校續(xù)約?
Cathy:In this community, we feel the meticulous care of our school. The most important thing is to be life-long learners, to continue to learn and to grow with children, and put teaching first. Also, I have experienced great personal growth in this school where Chinese and Western cultures are blended, including but not limited to mathematical teaching concepts, latest terminology and Western mathematics teaching methods (I would like to address Dr wall for his efforts in Maths training, he offers weekly mathematics strengthening classes which makes me see the breadth and depth of Western mathematical thought and how that differ from Chinese mathematics, as well as the delicacy and beauty of mathematics). One more thing worth mentioning here is that communication with Expat teachers has also let me see the difference between understanding and teaching. I have witnessed the processes of Expat teachers in handling children's emotions, how to protect their rights and how to perform their duties, which has give me a clearer understanding of Western practice. There is no denying that our learning environment is the key reason for me to stay. Also the children here, although sometimes they are excited and noisy, they are active and showing their nature, they are independent-minded and joyful; being a part of their growth makes every teacher feel happy. It is a pleasure to communicate with the children, and spend time with them makes me think deeply. In the beginning, their view of the world is na?ve but gradually you see that they become more serious and responsible for their behaviors. In addition, I would like to mention our lovely parents; some parents will come and discuss with me about their children's learning, how to give support and guidance to them in cultivating their interest in mathematics and good habits. These ideas will also enlighten my teaching reflection.
在這個(gè)社區(qū),我們感受到了學(xué)校無(wú)微不至的關(guān)懷,我們的工作最重要的就是沉淀自己、讓自己繼續(xù)成長(zhǎng),在教學(xué)的路上越走越好,身體力行地成為一名終生學(xué)習(xí)者;第二,對(duì)個(gè)人的成長(zhǎng),在這個(gè)中西文化交融的學(xué)校里,我能學(xué)習(xí)到很多,包括但不僅限于數(shù)學(xué)理念、教學(xué)及數(shù)學(xué)專業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)和西方的數(shù)學(xué)教學(xué)方法(在此向Dr wall致謝,每周一次的數(shù)學(xué)加強(qiáng)班讓我看到了不同于中國(guó)數(shù)學(xué)的寬度和深度以及數(shù)學(xué)的精致和美);當(dāng)然和外籍老師的交流也讓我看到不同文化對(duì)于數(shù)學(xué)教學(xué)的重難點(diǎn)和側(cè)重點(diǎn)有所不一樣;甚至對(duì)于孩子情緒的處理,老師怎樣履行自己的職責(zé)都讓我有一個(gè)更清晰的概念……。第三是這里的孩子們,雖然有的時(shí)候他們有點(diǎn)過(guò)于活潑,但是活躍、有主見(jiàn)的他們給我們留下了滿堂歡笑,參與孩子們的成長(zhǎng)讓每個(gè)老師都感到幸福。和孩子交流是一件很愉快的事情,和孩子的聊天讓我深思,他們對(duì)世界的看法童真又有趣,你可以見(jiàn)證他們的思維一步步從稚嫩到成熟、有擔(dān)當(dāng)。最后不得不提到家長(zhǎng)們,從第一年執(zhí)教直至現(xiàn)在,時(shí)常會(huì)有家長(zhǎng)前來(lái)和我探討孩子的學(xué)習(xí)情況,了解該如何培養(yǎng)孩子對(duì)數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)科興趣以及如何教育孩子養(yǎng)成良好的習(xí)慣,這些反饋或者想法對(duì)于我的教學(xué)也會(huì)有一定的啟發(fā)作用。

Q:Is there a famous quote or song lyric you would like to share that represents your time at BMH or your educational perspectives?
有沒(méi)有一句名言或歌詞能夠代表你在柏朗思觀瀾湖學(xué)校生活工作的感受或教育理念?
Cathy:Even though I cannot discover mathematics in my life but I can teach Maths each day of my life, that is my goal and I want to achieve that.
雖然我做不到發(fā)展數(shù)學(xué),可能也做不到教授數(shù)學(xué),但希望一直教數(shù)學(xué),也許教著教著,學(xué)著學(xué)著,也能教授數(shù)學(xué),要為自己設(shè)立一個(gè)小目標(biāo),也許哪天就實(shí)現(xiàn)了。
Life is good for only two things,
discovering mathematics
and teaching mathematics.
生命只為兩件事,
發(fā)展數(shù)學(xué)與教授數(shù)學(xué)。
