The Chinese Cultural Month, organized and hosted by the Early Years & Primary Division Chinese curriculum team, was held in October as a way of honoring the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Chinese culture and traditions are well blended into the Chinese curriculum and students of different grade levels carried out various learning activities based on their language skills and demonstrated their learning through a variety of mediums.
Teachers and students of Kindergarten inquired on the subject of Chinese last names by learning the “Last Name Song”, getting familiar with each other’s last names, and writing the last names in Chinese Calligraphy. This is a sound foundation that will help transition the students into writing their full names in Chinese.
Grade 1 Students engaged themselves as learners of Chinese idiom stories. Based on their understanding, Grade 1 students created illustrations for the idiom stories and will come in contact with more when they focus on this element of the Chinese curriculum later on in the school year.
Grade 2 Students dived into Chinese mythical stories. After reading multiple stories, Grade 2 students compared similarities and differences of mythical stories and inquired on their origin, language uniqueness, and the structures of writing. In demonstrating their learning outcomes, not only did the students create illustrations for mythical stories, but they also re-told the stories using their language (including body language) after discovering that many of these stories are passed on through word of mouth.
As part of their 2nd Units of Inquiry, Grade 3 students studied Chinese history and geography. Through the learning of the “Dynasties Song”, the students became knowledgeable on the order of the Chinese dynasties. In honoring the host country’s culture, Grade 3 students also recited poems, watched the national day parade, and wrote essays on their impressions of the parade.
Grade 4 Students surrounded their learning on the beautiful story of “Wan Nian Lao”, a story that teaches the importance and values of virtue through the display of honesty and integrity shown by a candy-maker. Students also gained knowledge of the procedure for making Chinese Candled fruit and recreated the story flow chart.
In their 1st unit of inquiry, Grade 5 students inquired and researched a well-known Chinese Cultural Celebrity of their interested, composed a bibliography based on the information collected, and shared their learning with the class in a form of an oral report.
Under the guidance of the guest speaker, Grade 5 students also studied the 9 sons of the Dragon, and how filmmakers visualized the 9th son “Tao Tie” and presented in the movie “The Great Wall” after extensive research in historic books. Inspired by the process, Gavin from Grade 5 Green even designed his version of “Taotie”.
