Learning without Walls: Exploring Balanced Diet
“Is the tomato a vegetable or a fruit?” “Which food are green food?”... On the morning of September 17, Grade 2 students visited Sam’s Club with different questions in their minds. In the inquiry class of Unit 1, students learned the five categories of food, understood the importance of a balanced diet, and made a study-and-rest schedule for the class.
堅果、 蛋糕、冰淇淋、榴蓮......它們含有脂肪、碳水化合物還是維生素呢?海草是不是植物?蜂蜜是蛋白質還是糖?孩子們分成兩組,穿梭在超市的各個區(qū)域,一組用iPad拍下食物,一組在白板上記錄每位小朋友的問題。回到學校后,孩子們會把所有的問題集合起來,在即將到來的單元成果展上向爸爸媽媽展示探究答案。這真是個忙碌的早晨!
Nuts, cakes, ice cream, durian... Do they contain fat, carbohydrates or vitamins? The students were divided into two groups to walk around various areas of the supermarket. One group took pictures with the iPad while the other recorded their questions on the whiteboard. Back to school, they put all their questions together and will present their answers to their parents at the upcoming Unit Celebration. It was a busy morning!

An IB education focuses on student inquiry, awareness and critical thinking, which connects with SLIS’s concept of: Learning without Walls. In addition to taking students out of the campus, we also have other forms of education, with parents, community police officers and dietitians invited to class. We encourage and develop student inquiry and promote many forms of innovative learning.
SLIS進行消防安全緊急疏散演習
為了提高師生消防安全意識,推進學校安全教育工作,9月18日上午,SLIS全體師生進行了消防安全緊急疏散演習。演習前,學校制定了詳細的安全演練預案,召開專題會議,對演練過程中各集合區(qū)域負責人、樓層、疏散通道負責老師進行詳細的安排和部署。演習當日聽到警鐘后,全校師生從各課室和辦公室迅速、有序地按照指定的消防疏散通道向操場疏散。安全撤離到操場后,各班老師清點學生人數,確保每一位學生都已安全撤離。通過本次消防疏散演練,使師生熟悉疏散的程序和線路,確保在突發(fā)事件發(fā)生時,全校師生能快速、高效、有序地撤離,提高師生安全自我保護能力,建設平安校園。
Fire Drill at SLIS
In order to improve the fire safety awareness of teachers and students and to promote school safety education, SLIS held an emergency evacuation drill for all teachers and students on the morning of September 18. Before the drill, the school formulated a detailed safety drill plan and held a special meeting to arrange staff taking charge of various zones, such as assembly areas, floors and evacuation passages during the exercise. After hearing the alarm on the day of the drill, all teachers and students of the school evacuated to the playground quickly through the designated fire evacuation passages. Upon safe evacuation to the playground, teachers of each class count their students to ensure that each student had been safely evacuated. All staff, security and school visitors must also be accounted for. This fire evacuation drill made teachers and students familiar with the procedures and routes of evacuation in case of emergency, enhanced their self-protection ability, and helped the building of a safe campus.

家長們圍成一個圈,互相認識
學校從多維度關注學生發(fā)展,重視學生創(chuàng)造力、判斷力、綜合分析能力等高階技能。我們評價學生的方法包括:評估過程、觀察結果、開放性測試等多種評估工具相結合。
SLIS會定期舉辦家長沙龍,以便讓更多家長了解IB PYP階段的教學理念及學校的相關政策。SLIS與家長們一起,共同搭建持續(xù)穩(wěn)定的家校平臺。
The school focuses on students’ development from multiple dimensions, and pays appropriate attention to higher-order cognitive skills such as creating, evaluating and analyzing. Our methods used for assessing students include a combination of tools, for example, process focused assessments, selected responses and open-ended tasks.
SLIS will hold regular Parent Workshops to help more parents understand the teaching philosophy of the IB PYP stage and the policies of the school. SLIS works with parents to build a sustainable and stable home-school platform.
