- 權(quán)威型家長認(rèn)為自己在孩子心目中具有權(quán)威地位,而這種權(quán)威來自親子之間的理解和尊重;
- 專制型家長要求子女的絕對服從;
Family Education Defines the Future of Children - From the Principal
Today let’s discuss how family education helps children to achieve a better future.
National Principal: Julia Li
Dr. Li Wangyang from Beijing Normal University has done a lot of studies on how family education affects children's achievements. According to one of the studies, family background has two factors which influence the child's future educational achievements: one is to provide family economic resources; the other is to provide family non-economic resources. The family non-economic resources include: family parenting concepts and behaviours, educational expectations, and family atmosphere and environment.
In recent years, the impact of family non-economic resources on the development and achievements of children's education has drawn more and more attentions by academic researchers. One study found that the role of these non-economic resources is far greater than the influence of household economic resources.
Meanwhile, by American psychologist Diana Baumrind, there are three family education styles: authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive.
Authoritative parents believe that they have an authoritative position in the child's mind, and this authority comes from the understanding and respect between parents and children;
Authoritarian parents demand the absolute obedience from their children;
Laissez-faire parents give children plenty of space, rarely ask for it, or even let it go.
A survey found that the performance of children who from authoritative families is better. This includes getting better test scores, higher self-esteem and subjective well-being, and less deviant behavior. Based on the latest research, the parenting styles of our parents in China are mainly authoritative (39%), followed by neglected (34%), and authoritative is around 13%. It can be seen that three-quarters of the children are in a family environment where little communication between parents and child is seen.
As an educator, I deeply feel that the school should take responsibilities for building a community of parents’ learning and help parents do a better job in family education, because it is not only to support parents, but we also need to be responsible for the future of the child. For this, we have put in a lot of effort to build a community for parents’ learning. For example, on the 7th of July, we invited Dr. Jia Qiong, Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii and a visiting scholar at Harvard University to hold a salon of‘Enjoy your children while they are on your side’for parents. This event attracted nearly 100 parents to participate. Based on three scientific research results, Dr. Jia Qiong shared her experiences and successful examples in the education of her children. The three scientific research results are:
? Terman Research:The factor that influences career success is personality quality.
? Stanford Research: The more parents value family education, the better their children learn.
? Grit Research: Grit is the most reliable indicator of success.
I always believe that the growth of children is inseparable from the tacit interaction and cooperation between home and school. Therefore, we are committed to build a community to provide our parents with family education and more learning platforms on various kinds of topic to promote the mutual-development of home and school. Parents knowing more, is a blessing to the child.
