Part one
今年50歲的Dr. Brecken Chinn已經(jīng)是第19次來到中國了。在中國的22年間,她曾受邀在中國南京大學(xué)、南京師范大學(xué)等知名學(xué)府做特約講座,主題包括國際關(guān)系,跨文化交流、教育教學(xué)與公共事業(yè)管理。由于精通英語、漢語、日語、西班牙語四國語言,這使她在國際交流和跨文化交流領(lǐng)域擁有豐富的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。
“我熱愛教育,教育是我一生的事業(yè)?!?/span>在與她交流共事的這段時(shí)間里,總能聽見她擲地有聲地說出這句話。
2019年,經(jīng)過長期的籌備策劃,美國威睿達(dá)思學(xué)校全球第12所分校成功落地深圳,6月9日,深圳校區(qū)首次對(duì)外開放,而Brecken Chinn校長也是第一次正式亮相在深圳家長及學(xué)生面前。當(dāng)時(shí)她才剛結(jié)束在美國威睿達(dá)思總校的學(xué)習(xí),第一次來到深圳。一來到學(xué)校,她便愛上了這里?!拔矣X得你們找到了中國最美麗的大樓!”學(xué)校的建筑是圓形的,強(qiáng)調(diào)自由討論的課堂氛圍,非常適合古典精英教育。每一個(gè)樓層的教室也不同于傳統(tǒng)學(xué)校,每個(gè)教室的座椅可以被靈活擺成不同的造型,可以進(jìn)行靈活的調(diào)動(dòng)。

在美國威睿達(dá)思總校學(xué)習(xí)的那段時(shí)間也堅(jiān)定了Brecken Chinn校長擔(dān)任深圳分校校長的決心。威睿達(dá)思學(xué)校是一個(gè)無與倫比的學(xué)校,老師們享受在這里教學(xué),學(xué)生們享受在此學(xué)習(xí)。“我也曾經(jīng)在大學(xué)當(dāng)老師,我相信威睿達(dá)思的畢業(yè)生擁有大學(xué)生的水平,甚至超過了大學(xué)生的水平。我有信心,深圳分校的孩子同樣可以做到更好?!?/span>

創(chuàng)辦一所學(xué)校是Brecken Chinn深藏心中多年的夢(mèng)想,如今這個(gè)夢(mèng)想在中國深圳這個(gè)現(xiàn)代化都市、在德朗睿思國際學(xué)校實(shí)現(xiàn),她滿懷感激與欣喜,踏上這趟全新的旅程 ,接受了這一場不一樣的挑戰(zhàn)——“這無疑是我職業(yè)生涯里最好的選擇之一。”

Dr. Brecken Chinn, age 50, is in China for her 19th time. Over her 22 years of experience in China, she has been invited to give special lectures at numerous well-known universities in China on topics including international relations, intercultural communication, education, teaching, and nonprofit management. She is proficient in English, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish, which gives her rich experience in the field of international and intercultural exchange.
"I love education -- education is my life's work," she says. During our time working together, I often hear her say these words with real passion.
In 2019, after a long period of preparation and planning, the 12th branch of Veritas Collegiate Academy, based in the United States, successfully landed in Shenzhen. On June 9th, 2019, the Shenzhen campus was opened to the public for the first time, and Principal Brecken Chinn was officially presented to parents and students in Shenzhen for the first time. At that time, she had just finished her preparation period at Veritas Collegiate Academy in the United States, arriving in Shenzhen for the first time. As soon as she came to school, she fell in love with it. "I think you have found the most beautiful building in China!," she exclaimed. The school building is unique in its circular architecture, very suitable for classical education, with its emphasis on discussion and Socratic inquiry. Each floor is different from a traditional school, and classroom seats can be configured in different shapes, and flexibly adjusted.
During her many years of study in the United States, Dr. Chinn strengthened in determination to serve as principal of a classical school like VCA Shenzhen. Veritas Collegiate Academy is an unparalleled school alliance through which teachers enjoy teaching and students enjoy learning. "I have served as a university professor for years, and I can see that Veritas graduates have a level of communication competence on par with college students, or often better. I am confident that VCA Shenzhen can reach the same level, or even higher."
Dr. Chinn's long-cherished dream of starting a school has now been realized in the modern city of Shenzhen, China, at VCA-SZ, and she is grateful and delighted to embark on this new journey and take on this different challenge. “It is undoubtedly one of the best choices of my career,”she feels.

Part two
“我到過世界的許多地方,見過許多人,但從來沒有把自己的生活許諾給任何人,直到我碰到了周琳?!?2004年10月22日,Brecken Chinn為了完成自己馬里蘭大學(xué)國際交流學(xué)博士學(xué)位的博士論文,正要前往訪問一位中央電視臺(tái)的編輯。這一天,是不幸女孩周琳幸運(yùn)的一天,也是Brecken Chinn幸運(yùn)的一天。

如果沒有遇到周琳,她將按部就班地完成馬里蘭大學(xué)國際交流學(xué)的博士學(xué)位,然后擁有一份教職工作,開始自己的職業(yè)生涯;如果沒有遇到Brecken Chinn,四川重度燒傷兒童周琳將無法獲得這樣的奇跡——眼前這位女士,領(lǐng)養(yǎng)了自己,陪伴自己做了一場又一場的手術(shù),幫助自己站起來,甚至將已經(jīng)15歲,沒有任何英文基礎(chǔ)的自己,成功送入了馬薩諸塞州的迪安學(xué)院,并順利完成了學(xué)業(yè)。

“我愛上了周琳,周琳也愛上了我?!泵看握勂鹬芰?,Brecken Chinn的臉上總會(huì)浮現(xiàn)出一絲慈愛的神情。為了照顧周琳,她放棄了能在中國大學(xué)教書的機(jī)會(huì),哪怕她所有的博士課程都是為此準(zhǔn)備的?!斑@些都不重要,沒有什么比她更重要。”

Brecken Chinn校長至今也沒有放棄早年創(chuàng)立的HandReach慈善機(jī)構(gòu),“我遇到過很多孩子,他們可能前一秒還是可愛積極活潑的孩子,后一秒大火就奪去了他們的一切?!痹谥v述這段往事時(shí)她的聲音低了下去,仿佛在回憶那些孩子?!拔沂懿涣?,那太可憐了。”她知道的所有的燒傷兒童都是因?yàn)榧依锉容^貧窮,所以HandReach慈善機(jī)構(gòu)答應(yīng)這些家庭,會(huì)幫助他們,直到他們得到自己的工作,能夠在社會(huì)上生存。

"I have traveled to many parts of the world and met many people, but I never promised my life to anyone until I met Zhou Lin." On October 22, 2004, Brecken Chinn was on her way to interview an editor at China Central Television for her doctoral thesis on Communication Studies at the University of Maryland.This day was a lucky day for the unfortunate girl Zhou Lin, and also a lucky day for Brecken Chinn.
If she hadn't met Zhou Lin, she would have simply completed her PhD in Communication at the University of Maryland, earned a full-time faculty job, and started her career. Without meeting Brecken Chinn, Zhou Lin, a severely burned child in Sichuan, would not have been able to achieve the miracle of being adopted by a woman who would accompany her through one operation after another, help her stand and learn to walk again, and even succeed at a top US high school and earn her college degree, with multiple award and honors, from Dean College in Massachusetts.
"Zhou Lin and I are family, and we love each other," Dr. Chinn sighs. Her face always holds a loving expression when she talks about Zhou Lin. In order to take care of Zhou Lin as her own adopted daughter, she gave up her opportunity to teach at a Chinese university, even though all her doctoral courses prepared her for it. "Nothing is more important than her."
Principal Brecken Chinn has yet to give up on the charity she created to aid child burn survivors, HandReach, which she founded in graduate school with Chinese classmates. "I met a lot of children who might have been lovely and active one second, and then the fire took everything away from them," she says, her voice dropping as she recounts the story, as if recalling the children. "I can't stand it. It's too unfair to them." All the burn-injured children she knows are from poor families, so her charity HandReach promises these families that it will help them until they get their own jobs and can survive in society.

Part three
“校長對(duì)生活的一切都充滿了熱情,這也感染到了我們。我在工作上有任何的疑問在與校長交流后都能得到很好的指導(dǎo),跟她在一起工作,讓我覺得德朗睿思不僅僅只是一個(gè)學(xué)校,而是自己的家。我堅(jiān)信,一個(gè)能這么多年無私奉獻(xiàn)在慈善事業(yè)上的人,對(duì)待學(xué)生,對(duì)待教育,一定也是充滿愛和情懷的?!?/p>
在德朗睿思國際學(xué)校,日常教學(xué)實(shí)踐是9點(diǎn)至3點(diǎn),9點(diǎn)之前會(huì)進(jìn)行一些運(yùn)動(dòng),3點(diǎn)之后可以選擇自己喜歡的運(yùn)動(dòng),科技項(xiàng)目或藝術(shù)活動(dòng)。初中階段不分特定的7,8,9年級(jí),而是根據(jù)學(xué)生的英文水平進(jìn)行分班,教授們會(huì)共同為每一位學(xué)生制定個(gè)性化的教學(xué)方案。課程是分課題來的,最近校長正在和其他的教授討論今年新開學(xué)16周每周的研究課題,所有的老師之間都是相互聯(lián)系的,每周的課程都圍繞著這個(gè)課題展開。Brecken Chinn校長也會(huì)親自教授修辭課,這是她在大學(xué)教學(xué)多年的科目并為此寫了一本教材。學(xué)校的老師們也都是在專業(yè)領(lǐng)域研究多年,大多都有幾十年的教學(xué)經(jīng)驗(yàn)。

在德朗睿思國際學(xué)校,還有一種有別于其他學(xué)校的制度——“導(dǎo)師制”。每一位導(dǎo)師只會(huì)負(fù)責(zé)5-8名學(xué)生,他們會(huì)對(duì)學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)、生活、家庭了如指掌,通過長期的跟蹤,為其提供個(gè)性化的指導(dǎo),使每個(gè)學(xué)生最終都能發(fā)揮出最大的潛能。
學(xué)校的核心是人,歸根結(jié)底,學(xué)校的成長與每個(gè)人息息相關(guān),在她心里,建設(shè)一所學(xué)校,不僅僅是建筑物和團(tuán)隊(duì)的日漸成型,更是能匯集一大群能夠攜手同行的伙伴、朋友和親人,學(xué)校團(tuán)隊(duì)中有許多人是帶著對(duì)過往的遺憾和對(duì)未來的期許,遠(yuǎn)道而來,德朗睿思很幸運(yùn)能遇上志同道合且堅(jiān)定不移的同路人。

"The principal is passionate about everything in life, and that has infected us. If I have any questions about my work, I know I can get good guidance after talking to the principal. Working with her makes me feel that VCA-SZ is not only a school, but also my own home. I firmly believe that a person who can devote so many years to charity can treat students and education. "It must be full of love and true feelings."
At VCA-SZ, daily teaching practice is from 9 to 3, with daily exercise carried out before 9, and after 3, you can choose your favorite sports, technology, or artistic activities. The school is not divided into grades, but according to the students' English level. The faculty of the school together work out a personalized teaching program for each student. Courses are divided into topics, and the principal is collaborating with other faculty about the 16 weeks of the coming school year, and the weekly research topics. All teachers are connected to each other on a daily basis, and the weekly course content centers around integrated topics across the curriculum. Principal Brecken Chinn also teaches rhetoric classes herself, a course she taught for years at the college level, and for which she has written a textbook. The teachers at the school have been studying in their professional fields for decades, and most of them have years of teaching experience in China.
There is also a system that is different from other schools—the "tutorial system." Each tutor will only be responsible for 5-8 students, and they will become very familiar with students' study, life, family, etc. Through long-term follow-up, they can provide personalized guidance, so that each student can eventually reach their maximum potential.
The core of the school is people, in the final analysis. The growth of the school is closely related to everyone, in their hearts. The construction of a school is not only in the building. Through mutual respect, the team is gradually taking shape, which also can bring together a large group of partners, friends, and relatives who can walk hand in hand. Many people in the school team come from afar with regrets from the past and hope for the future. VCA-SZ is very lucky to meet like-minded and unswerving fellow travelers.

“那么您覺得德朗睿思國際學(xué)校的畢業(yè)生,將會(huì)有什么樣的品質(zhì)?希望他們獲得什么樣的人生成就呢?”
在回答這個(gè)問題之前,Brecken Chinn校長和我們分享了一個(gè)她的學(xué)生成長的故事。那是一個(gè)韓國的學(xué)生,畢生的愿望就是進(jìn)入哈佛大學(xué),他的房間貼滿了哈佛大學(xué)的海報(bào),她也幫助他申請(qǐng)哈佛大學(xué)。這個(gè)學(xué)生,從小就特別喜歡研究青蛙,后來他發(fā)表了一篇相關(guān)的研究論文,有許多頂尖院校都錄取了他,包括夢(mèng)寐以求的哈佛大學(xué),但最終他選擇了伊利諾伊香檳分校,只因?yàn)樵谀壳暗难芯款I(lǐng)域,這個(gè)學(xué)校更適合。現(xiàn)在他是這個(gè)世界上最出色的青蛙研究者之一。
“所以我們的目標(biāo)是培養(yǎng)孩子們有自己的想法,思考問題的能力。孩子們能知道自己想要什么,有一個(gè)目標(biāo),這個(gè)目標(biāo)不是家長的、不是老師的,是自己的,能真正找到自己是誰?!?/span>
大學(xué)申請(qǐng)固然重要,但是這僅僅只是孩子們?nèi)氯松囊粋€(gè)起點(diǎn),德朗睿思國際學(xué)校希望能創(chuàng)造出豐富多姿的學(xué)習(xí)生活,培養(yǎng)出不只是能適應(yīng)大學(xué)生活的孩子,更希望學(xué)生們能最終對(duì)社會(huì)做出貢獻(xiàn)。

"So what qualities do you think the graduates of VCA-SZ will have and what achievements do you hope they will achieve in life?"
Before answering this question, Principal Chinn shared with us stories about her own college coaching students over the years. One was a Korean student whose lifelong ambition was to get into Harvard University. Her room had been plastered with Harvard swag for years. Dr. Chinn helped the student to apply to Harvard University, and she did get accepted there. However, in the end, the student, who had always loved to study frogs, chose the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign because it was more suitable for her desired research field. She was able to work closely with her professors, publish original research, and has now become one of the top amphibian researchers in the world.
"So our goal is to develop students’ ability to have their own ideas, to think about problems. Children can know what they want, and have a goal, which is not a parent's goal, not a teacher's goal, but their own goal, to really find out who they are."
College applications are important, but are only a starting point for students’ future life. VCA-SZ hopes to provide an enriched environment for students who are not only qualified for college, but ultimately can make real contributions to society.
