To the graduating class of 2019 and to our graduating 8th grade class. In both groups, each individual will begin writing a new chapter of your book after today. The high school graduates will be preparing to physically move to another country and preparing for all the challenges; all of life’s real challenges. You will no longer live in the comfort of your own home, the comfort of a country that speaks your language, the comfort of someone holding your hand and always helping you to solve every little problem that you encounter. You will go on to face the challenges that await you, and you will do so mostly alone. If you have prepared yourself for these challenges you will face some tough times ahead, but you will be able to carry on and see your way through the adversity because you have prepared. If you have not adequately prepared for life aboard and a life away from your parents these challenges may be insurmountable; but I hope you will find it in yourself to never give up. You reap what you sow and the harvest is soon to come in. Be prepared and put yourself into a realistic understanding of what awaits you. In the words of Benjamin Franklin; “By failing to prepare, you prepare to fail.” This is a very short sentence but the meaning is immense. Your scholastic aptitude and your self-discipline will be tested daily when you are abroad. Be prepared.
To our 8th grade students you will be moving on to high school. High school marks the true beginning of your educational journey. High school spans four years and will mark the start of your journey for college, a journey that will be recorded. Your journey will be recorded daily with attendance, and in the grade book; ultimately resulting in a transcript---hopefully. One does not necessarily have to be the smartest to get the best grades. What one does need is to have drive and determination to succeed. While school is often looked at as a series of academic tests it is also a test of self-discipline. This means getting out of bed even though you are tired, attending a class that you might not be interested in and still trying your best, and completing homework when it would be more fun to go play basketball. A journey that must be taken seriously, but not so seriously that you are never able to enjoy some of the scenery.
Both our 12th graders and 8th graders must be prepared to learn, to self-motivate, to help others, and to take responsibility for your actions. All of you are now old enough, and hopefully wise enough to understand the significance of the pervious statement. As quoted by Vernon Law “Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, and the lesson afterward.” Again, do not fall into the trap of being unprepared. Many people will tell you don’t worry about it; everything will work out. Please, do not follow that advice. Rare is the day that everything works out from luck. The most assured way to achieve success and greatness is to be prepared, to work hard, and to make things happen. I will tell you, there are three different types of people: those who make things happens, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened. Take this advice seriously, and be the person who makes things happen. Remember, there is seldom a traffic jam on the stretch of road marked “the extra mile”; the reason being is most people simply do not travel there. Working while everyone else is resting will bring you closer to that lonely stretch of road titled “the extra mile.”
One of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport, Muhammad Ali, was once asked “how many sit-ups do you do every day?” His response was “I don’t know how many I do, because I don’t start counting until it hurts.” This one simple sentence says it all. That is a never say die attitude; that is a man who was willing to give his all every day to be the best; to become the greatest.
In this room today, there are plenty of what people might call ordinary people; but please look to the person to your left, and then to your right, then look at yourself and ask which one of us will be the extraordinary individual in a sea of ordinary individuals?
In President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 speech in reference to space exploration he said:
“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win.”
I was going to conclude by saying best of luck; but decided against as luck will not see you through. So I will conclude by saying always put your best effort forward, and remember it is always darkest before the dawn thus making it the scariest time with the most uncertainty and the least clarity. When you are ready to give up; that is the moment you must never give up; for that is the moment that is one moment behind success. Remember, the easy way and the right way are seldom the same. It is not easy to the right thing in the face of the easy thing. But the greatest reward and satisfaction await when you succeed in an area you thought to be impossible.
