With the finale of May Holiday, the curtain rises to signal the end game for our first year of MLIAS. On Tuesday May 7th, students gathered together to watch candidates from every section pit their linguistic talents against one another. Meanwhile, 15 students from the high school division underwent their own trials; a speech contest qualifier round. Every student prepared and took the stage with confidence and gusto in skills that they manifested over the past six months. That evening, the high school judges bared witness to the oral mastery that their students had developed. Highlights from the event include: Erru Wang confidently dissecting what makes an ideal sandwich (hers includes chicken breast, avocado, and red lettuce); Louie Luo conjuring an ode to persistence and never giving up in the form of a story; Eric Liu desperately pleading to improve wild animal protection from poachers across the world; Kyle Gao invoking the spirit of family both by blood and of choice; and Jenny Zheng calling forth a new wave of Chinese millennials who choose to value income and personal prosperity over children.
With so many powerful speakers, the selection of the three representatives of the high school division was controversial among the judges. Some desired phonological fluency over emotional appeal. Others thought that stage presence and confidence triumphed over logical order in ideas. Alas, the three representatives indeed mirrored the strengths and weaknesses of the majority. Harmony Tumalizi conducting a masterful ballad between the relationship of music and life, Daisy Deng instigating a psychological change in the stigma behind cellphones in school, and Tiffany Xu executing a monologue on achieving the complexity that is universally known as success. It is safe to say that all judges were blown away with the progression of their natural cadence and look forward to the limitless potential of these adept individuals.
MLIAS is organizing one of their longest standing events with teachers from all departments contributing and hosting events for the students to participate in. Although the high school will bow out of the remaining events in favor of a final push towards traditional academics, they have built a community amongst themselves; one that will hopefully cultivate their individual talents and foster friendships that last a lifetime.
