My Two-Week Journey of Being a Creative Writer in my EFL Class
G10E Humming Li
I am Humming Li who is studying in grade 10 English Advanced Class. My current English teachers are Ms. Jona Zhang and Ms. Jocelyn Ymbong whom I have the privilege to be taught on our subject- English First Language (EFL). They gave us a lots of reading and writing assignments but the one I have been working on for a longer period of time and found the most interesting is the narrative writing project assigned by Ms. Ymbong.
It was at some time of quarter four that Ms. Ymbong brought this project to the class. She emphasized the importance of the project because it will go to a big piece of our quarter grade and she will publish our work on some website. We were given two weeks to finish the whole process of writing. The first thing that Ms. Ymbong asked us to do was to have an idea on what genre our story will be like before she handed out a worksheet (story mountain planner) for us to fill out.
I thought that I would need to spend a lengthier time on this project compared to the other writings I did in this school year. Thus I thought it would be a good idea if it is a two-to-three thousand word novella. I did not feel like writing an imagination-based story, so I opted for a realistic fiction as the genre of my novella.
Then, I pictured in my mind what my story would be like – Everything happens at a peaceful time and takes place in a small, remote village. Meanwhile, there are some conflicts happening throughout in this story of this ordinary family I had created in my mind. When I thought about the conflict(s) of the story, I did not consider taking in the complicated ones into my story because it is going to be a short work and the conflicts does not have to be big to reveal a bigger theme. As one may read on my article, one of the conflicts in the passages is based on the boy, Akimoto, who have internal issues on overcoming his fear.

Just like this, I put down some words on the worksheet and started to do the next assignment. We were required to make a poster or our storyboard, which shows the storyline of our writing. I drew a story mountain planner on the poster paper and included ‘exposition’, ‘rising action’, ‘climax’, ‘falling action’, and ‘resolution’ on it.
After this, the composition time had finally come. I checked out the lists of vocabulary in terms of dialogue, character traits, physical traits and sensory words which were provided by Ms. Ymbong for us to use in our writing and tried to add some of them into story. The first draft of my writing was written until climax and it contained many grammatical mistakes. After Ms. Ymbong proofread and pointed them out to me, I corrected them and finished the rest of my story. I found a picture, which I think fits my final draft and sent them to Ms. Ymbong to publish.
So you think writing is tiresome and boring? Well, surprisingly, I found myself enjoying the creative process that I went through being a writer. I hope other students will find it interesting as I do and if you have not read my story yet, please click on Read more on the left corner at the bottom. ENJOY READING!
