Dear Families and Teachers,

親愛的各位家長和老師們，

A friend asked me this week about the transformations I see in students at RDF international school. His question prompted me to reflect on the aims of education, which include transformation from youthfulness to adulthood.

一位朋友在本周問我，關(guān)于我在瑞得福國際學(xué)校學(xué)生所看到的各種轉(zhuǎn)變。他的問題促使我思考我們的教育所想要達(dá)成的目標(biāo)，包括從青春期到成年的蛻變。

In 1828, Noah Webster, the father of the American English dictionary, defined the purpose of education as follows:“Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations. To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a [moral] education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.”

Contact with great men and women is transformative. “The older I grow, the more I am convinced” said Booker T.Washington, “that there is no education which one can get from books and costly apparatus that is equal to that which can be gotten from contact with great menand women…. How I wish that our schools and colleges might learn to study menand things!”

We should let our children come in contact with great men and women, and, more importantly, to become great men and women ourselves.Greatness includes developing the virtues of knowledge, wisdom, judgment, kindness, mercy, and optimism.

我們應(yīng)該讓我們的孩子與偉大的人物接觸，更重要的是，我們自己要成為偉大的人。偉大的特質(zhì)包括發(fā)展知識，智慧，判斷力，仁慈，憐憫和樂觀的美德。

When I ask students about how they see themselves changing and growing, they universally refer to teachers or friends who inspire them to be more responsive, loving, or kind—or to love a specific subject matter more. Some appreciate that they are developing more responsibility, discipline, and fortitude through the opportunities,friendships, and courses at the school. Many students, including my own children,have been inspired and transformed by RDFIS’s teachers and friends in suchways.

I visited with a former RDFIS student this week, who was visiting RDFIS while on vacation from America. I asked him about his experiences in America and RDFIS, and he said he truly was transformed by the warm, family like feeling at RDFIS. While here, his English improved,and his desire to learn increased, and he has a desire to return here, because he was learning much in this warm and structured atmosphere.

本周我采訪了一位前RDFIS學(xué)生，他從美國回國度假訪問了RDFIS。我向他詢問了他在美國和RDFIS的經(jīng)歷，他說他真的被RDFIS的溫暖，家庭般的感覺所改變。在這里，他的英語水平提高了，他的學(xué)習(xí)欲望增強(qiáng)了，他渴望回到這里，因?yàn)樗谶@種溫暖而有條理的氛圍中學(xué)到了很多東西。

As principal, it is my deeply cherished honor to work with you and your children at this school. May we all continue to share goodness with each other as thoroughly and deeply as we can, so that we may all be transformed into well educated, and virtuous people who bring love and goodness into the world.

School-wide announcements and reminders this week include:

* Student Assembly. In this week’s assembly, after students sang the Chinese National Anthem, we encouraged them to keep their dorms clean and to ask questions in class. Learning is built by talking and conversation, and whoever engages in talking does the learning, so we encouraged students to talk in English and participate in class discussions as much as possible.

* Sports Report. The Eagles had a great week as both soccer teams were in action. On Monday, RDF played hard but came up short against QSIS. Thursday, the boys faced BASIS and despite being down 2-0 faught back to score twice and end the match with a draw and apoint for the league table! On Saturday,the HS badminton team will be participating in the league tournament inNanshan. Good luck to our players! Next week, our Track and Field team will be hosting the SISAC league schools at RDF for the Dapeng Relays beginning at 8:30on Friday. The day will be filled with exciting individual and team competition and we look forward to supporting our track athletes.

* World Scholars Cup Registration is ongoing and is due by April 20. The competition is on May 11-12 in Green Oasis School. Four components of WSC include team debate,collaborative writing, scholar’s bowl, and “The Challenge.” The competition study guide is forwarded with this newsletter. * English Language Talent Show will occur on March 19 from 7–9 PM. The aim of the event is to encourage students to speak more English and celebrate the English learning atmosphere of RDFIS. Talents to be displayed include dubbing, drama, speech, and story telling. Talents were selected from G7 to G9 and are sure to give the audience a spectacular performance! Parents are welcome to join us for the show!

* RDF Superstar Dance Competition. The RDF Superstar Dance Competition will be on March 21 from 7–9 PM.

* Pubei Middle School Service, Friday,March 15–17. Students will share stories of their life at RDF International School and learn about the students in Pubei. The students will also visit local families in their homes to share groceries with them. There will also be evening seminars at the middle school. Many thanks to Erin Li, Summer Luo, Agatha Wu, and Chalyce Stevens for guiding this valuable service learning trip. This service partnership occurs multiple times per year, so if you are interested in having your child participate in the future, please contact your homeroom teacher.

* National High School Model United Nations(NHSMUN) takes place on July 15–18, 2019 in Guangzhou. The simulation-rich learning and competition event allows students to participate in political committees focused on economy, security, society, agriculture, and more! Students represent various countries with individual, bilateral, and group proposals. Student registration is managed through your homeroom teacher.
