Dr. John’s Letter
When I was growing up, my mother taught me a valuable lesson that I have always carried with me. This is something that I have been reminded of lately, as China, the United States, and countries all over the world struggle with the Coronavirus, or COVID 19. The lesson my mother taught - like much of what she taught me - was very simple and wise. When I became unhappy or sad or frustrated about something, preoccupied with the things in my life that were not going well, my mother would always remind me, in a slight Irish brogue, to “Count your blessings!”
This has always served as a constant reminder to me to be grateful for the good things in my life, which really comes down to the good people - family and friends - who always make my life better because they are part of it. It does little good to dwell on the negative things in my life, especially those I cannot change. Though I certainly wish that terrible events - such as the current crisis - were not taking place, it is far healthier to be thankful for the wonders and blessings that surround us. We just need to remind ourselves sometimes to look for those blessings, because it’s easy to lose sight of those blessings when things are not going well.
So, I would encourage everyone to take a moment to 'count your blessings’ because this crisis will pass, and we will have made it through a historic crisis that we will always remember. In the end, I would like to share music named ‘Youth’ which has been composed by one of our talented students, Kenny Zhang and a delicate video made by Noah He. I hope everyone will remember the days of our lives at BIPH.
This break is unexpectedly long and I miss the school so much, I miss all the time I spent with my classmates in studying, exercising and conducting…….all of my friends feel the same way, I wish this song can bring students’ back to school life!

In AP Physics we looked at some examples of angular momentum and rotational inertia. Using a spinning chair and some weights, students can see how changing the rotational inertia of a spinning body cause the angular speed to change as well. These demonstrations are great at helping students see the physics concepts they have learned function in real life. After that, students participated in an AP test-prep activity. Students needed to determine a procedure they could use to calculate the moment of inertia for a random object as it rolls down an inclined plane. Students were able to ask for measurements they needed to perform their calculations, and they successfully generated an experimental procedure that helped them to calculate the inertia of the object. As we prepare for the AP exam, experimental design activities like this one are vital to students’ success on the exam.

In Algebra 2 this week, we were working on increasing pace while maintaining accuracy. Miss K and her students both worked to complete math questions as fast as they could, and any student who completed a question correctly and faster than Miss K earned a point for their team. The team with the most points at the end of class could skip one homework set this week. Students felt the pressure of working under an uncertain deadline and had to practice typing their answers into the chat box according to guidelines for free response questions. Students were motivated to not only beat their peers but felt extra satisfaction when completing questions faster than their teacher. Increasing their pace is vital to having extra time to check their work and ensuring they are demonstrating their skills clearly on assessments. Congratulations to the students who earned one night off practice, all your hard work certainly is recognized and rewarded! Keep it up!

The Honors Chemistry course helps students understand the world around them by studying matter and the changes it undergoes. The course is designed to prepare students to take AP Chemistry. We are covering chemical reaction units which include Properties of Solutions, Acids and Bases and Stoichiometry. Students will understand the two main sub-branches of Analytical Chemistry Qualitative analysis: The determination of the identity of chemical species present in a sample: what is inside this sample? Quantitative analysis: An examination to determine how much of a particular species is present in a sample. How much of this chemical inside the sample? Quantitative analysis techniques are a very important part of chemistry and involve practical activities. The lab component teaches students how to apply the concepts learned in the course to experimental situations. Interactive online demonstrations are currently shown to help students be familiar with the equipment they will use in performing titrations.

One of our school’s educational goals is to help our students become qualified world citizens, which requires our children to be aware of the world and have a sense of their role in it. To become a global citizen, a student has to be creative and proactive. As reported in our previous newsletter, our Fine Arts students took the initiative to create many amazing paintings so as to support our warriors’ fighting against COVID-19, and this time, our students who excel in speech proactively showed their encouraging words and their beliefs in our final victory!
Sing With Love
Our care and love never stops reaching out to the others who are in need of support. Although China has obtained a phased achievement, COVID-19 outbreaks are spreading speedily in the rest of the world. “Everyone knows enough to understand that COVID-19 will test our capacities to be kind and generous……Our task now is to bring the best of who we are and what we do to [the] world…...” It is the time for us to send our care to the countries and people who are currently struggling and battling with the coronavirus. We know our students always regard our teachers and staff as their role models, so we always want to deliver nothing but positive spirits and kindness. Recently our teachers recorded a video of them singing the song “Imagine” together. Let’s listen together and may we all proceed with wisdom and grace!
