On Loyalty and Care

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This has been a very hard path these last few months, and I know all of us look forward to returning to a new normal. However, I want to take a moment to reflect and take stock.

I once, as a young teacher, asked the wisest Head of School whom I have ever met what makes a good school. Her response was simple: “generations of people who care”. This crisis and our community’s response has only deepened my respect for her insight.

Almost all our teachers have returned to China in preparation for our return to campus. Their loyalty to our community is moving and will not soon be forgotten. A crisis tests us, and these teachers have proven their great worth as professionals and colleagues. Our school has shown itself to be deeply resilient and loyal to our mission because our people are resilient and loyal to their responsibilities as serious educators. I have never before in a school witnessed such care.

Much has been written in newspapers and blogs claiming the world will not be the same when this crisis ends. I have no expertise to judge such claims. What I do know is that our educational practice will be enriched by our forced move to online learning. We will assemble a committee of teachers and managers and students to review the best practices of the last few months in order to incorporate them into our normal practice.

But no one should be in any doubt that the foundation of our accomplishments during this period has only appeared to be our online platforms. The virtual classroom Zoom provides can be as intellectually and emotionally empty as any brick-and-mortar classroom lead by a disengaged or incompetent teacher. Our online classrooms have been productive because our teachers and students have been tied together by strong bonds of fellow-feeling.

Stopping for a moment to take stock, what I see is a school that is strong and loyal to its mission because it is filled with teachers and managers who care.

在過(guò)去的幾個(gè)月里,我們經(jīng)歷了一段艱難的時(shí)光。我深知每個(gè)人都期待著回歸新常態(tài)。然而,在此我想先簡(jiǎn)要回顧和總結(jié)。

當(dāng)我還是一名年輕的教師時(shí),我曾向一位我眼中最睿智的校長(zhǎng)請(qǐng)教過(guò),是什么成就了一所優(yōu)秀的學(xué)校。她回答道:是那些一代代關(guān)心和支持學(xué)校的人們。雖然只有寥寥數(shù)語(yǔ),但是此次危機(jī)與我們集體的應(yīng)對(duì)印證了這位校長(zhǎng)的真知灼見(jiàn),加深了我對(duì)她的敬佩之情。

我們幾乎所有教師都已經(jīng)回到中國(guó),為重返校園做好準(zhǔn)備。他們對(duì)集體的忠誠(chéng)令人動(dòng)容,值得銘記。這場(chǎng)危機(jī)是一次考驗(yàn),而這些教師在此次考驗(yàn)中證明了他們的價(jià)值,彰顯了他們的職業(yè)素養(yǎng)。我校治學(xué)嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)?shù)慕處焾F(tuán)隊(duì)適應(yīng)力強(qiáng)、盡職盡責(zé)。因此,我們的學(xué)校始終堅(jiān)韌,忠于使命。這是我見(jiàn)過(guò)的最關(guān)心學(xué)生和熱愛(ài)學(xué)校的忠實(shí)教師團(tuán)隊(duì)。

新聞媒體上不乏這樣的言論:待疫情結(jié)束,這個(gè)世界將回不去從前。我無(wú)法評(píng)價(jià)這一觀(guān)點(diǎn)是對(duì)是錯(cuò),但我著實(shí)相信:我們的教學(xué)將因在線(xiàn)學(xué)習(xí)的推進(jìn)而變得更加豐富。我們將創(chuàng)建一個(gè)由教師、管理者和學(xué)生組成的團(tuán)隊(duì)共同回顧梳理過(guò)去數(shù)月遠(yuǎn)程教學(xué)的寶貴經(jīng)驗(yàn),以將其融入我們的常規(guī)教學(xué)之中。

誠(chéng)然,線(xiàn)上平臺(tái)是我們這一階段取得教學(xué)成果的重要手段。而實(shí)現(xiàn)學(xué)生在Zoom虛擬課堂有效獲得知識(shí)技能,并產(chǎn)生情感體驗(yàn)上的共鳴的關(guān)鍵,是教師的全心投入和良好的教學(xué)能力。因此,正是因?yàn)槲覀兊膸熒男南嗤ǎh(yuǎn)程授課才碩果累累。

When the school first announced the online learning program(via zoom), I was a little skeptical. Would this work? Could the teachers keep everyone’s attention for forty minutes straight over the Internet? All my questions were answered the day we started the zoom lessons. The online classes were actually very interesting, and we could watch multimedia resources. The teachers have everyone’s attention with fun PPTs and activities.

當(dāng)學(xué)校一開(kāi)始宣布啟動(dòng)(通過(guò)Zoom平臺(tái)的)線(xiàn)上教學(xué)的時(shí)候,我有些半信半疑。這能夠?qū)崿F(xiàn)嗎?老師們能夠通過(guò)網(wǎng)絡(luò)隔著屏幕讓每位同學(xué)保持40分鐘的注意力嗎?我的所有疑問(wèn)在Zoom課堂開(kāi)課的第一天得到了解答。在線(xiàn)上課太有趣了!老師用多媒體資源、趣味性強(qiáng)的幻燈片和課上活動(dòng)牢牢地抓住了我們的注意力。

When I saw my classmates and friends, I was overjoyed! What I like to say to my classmates and teachers is: I miss you guys a lot! To my classmates I miss playing with you guys on the playground during recess; I miss working together with you guys on projects, and I miss learning with you guys in class. To my teachers I miss learning in your classes; I miss asking questions and getting detailed, patient responses, and I also miss the friendly chatting with you.

的方式“回歸”到學(xué)習(xí)中!

After 5 long weeks of diligent and independent working from home, it is wonderful to be ‘virtually’ reunited as a community via the use of the online classrooms.

同學(xué)們?cè)赥eams平臺(tái)上經(jīng)歷了為期五周的勤奮學(xué)習(xí)后,這兩周在Zoom平臺(tái)上以線(xiàn)上直播課的方式與老師們見(jiàn)面。大家立刻凝聚到了一起,真的是太棒了!

Before online classes begun, the outstanding SETs and LETs of BASIS primary were working tirelessly to prepare for the inaugural online classes. They spent many an hour practicing on Zoom, testing its functionality and readiness to be used as an appropriate tool for our learners.

我們的班主任老師以及各科任老師放棄自己的休息時(shí)間、不辭辛苦地為Zoom平臺(tái)上的網(wǎng)絡(luò)直播課做準(zhǔn)備。他們花了許多的時(shí)間練習(xí)使用Zoom、探索平臺(tái)功能、并對(duì)如何幫助同學(xué)們更好地進(jìn)行線(xiàn)上學(xué)習(xí)進(jìn)行了討論、制定出了方案。

Before students even had their very first class, LETs went the extra mile and conducted trial Zoom sessions for students, giving them an opportunity to explore and become familiar with the platform in advance.

而我們的班主任老師,還為同學(xué)們開(kāi)展了一次Zoom的測(cè)試課,確保同學(xué)們能夠在上課之前學(xué)會(huì)登陸使用Zoom,提前熟悉基本功能。

During the first week of live classes, students were introduced to basic class protocols and expectations as they begun learning how to interact with Zoom, thus adding to their already vast catalogue of knowledge regarding online platforms and electronic devices. It is clear that the students are elated to once again be able to see and communicate with their teachers and classmates in real-time.

在第一周的直播課上,同學(xué)們不僅學(xué)習(xí)了直播課期間相應(yīng)的行為準(zhǔn)則與要求,也嘗試在平臺(tái)上與老師、同學(xué)們進(jìn)行了互動(dòng);這樣特別的學(xué)習(xí)經(jīng)歷,讓他們對(duì)在線(xiàn)學(xué)習(xí)平臺(tái)以及電子設(shè)備操作等的理解進(jìn)一步地加深。我們能感受到,孩子們?cè)凇翱吹健弊约旱睦蠋熍c同班同學(xué)時(shí)所表現(xiàn)出來(lái)的快樂(lè)與喜悅。

As you can see, students are showcasing some of the fun being had in class. What’s more, it is not just regular classes being taken, students are taking time out to perform important eye exercises, and movement activities to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

如您所知,同學(xué)們?cè)谥辈フn堂里展現(xiàn)出了許多讓人欣喜的成果。除此以外,同學(xué)們還在上課之余,在老師的帶領(lǐng)下,進(jìn)行了眼保健操以及身體鍛煉,確保他們?cè)趯W(xué)習(xí)期間,也保持良好、健康的生活方式。
