The Humanities department organised a successful trip to Germany in the Summer term to support the History Curriculum. Eight students from the Geography and History A-Level classes thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Berlin and Munich.
Mr. Lowe, ULink’s History teacher said, “The aim of the trip was to immerse the students in a different culture and to give them access to a living form of History, to bring to life the stories from their textbooks, to walk the same streets of those people they study in class and to develop a deeper and more fulfilling understanding of their subject.”
Whilst in Berlin the students took part in a series of walking History tours to sites of general historical interest and also sites directly referenced in their History classes. This included visits to the Reichstag Parliament building, the Berlin Wall and the Holocaust memorial as well as the Palace of Charlottenburg. The students also enjoyed cultural visits to a variety of museums and art galleries containing many influential pieces from the world of art. The immersion into German culture was a key part of the tour.
Shopping was also a firm favourite with the students as they enjoyed visits to the world class shopping centres in Germany’s capital city. Long-walks and sunny weather were a constant feature of our time in Berlin as were the world-famous Berlin sausages which we hungrily feasted upon to keep up our energy.
After our time in Berlin we took a cross-country train through the Black Forest to Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Famous for its central role in European History, Munich, nestled in the shadow of the Alps mountain range, provided the students with a different perspective of German culture as we entered the Kingdom of the mountain people. We journeyed to the fantastical castles of ‘Mad’ King Ludwig II, the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle, and learnt the tragic story of Ludwig. We also were able to stop in the village of Oberammergau, the ‘Fairy Tale’ village of European folklore. The following day was more sobering as we visited the site of the former concentration camp at Dachau, the first such camp in Nazi Germany. This gave the A-Level students first-hand experience of their syllabus and provided them with a real taste of the despair caused by this dark time in world history. Returning back to Munich we enjoyed a much-needed lifting of our spirits with some traditional food and drink and a spectacular art gallery hosting a world-famous Andy Warhol exhibition.
Ms. Wang, the local teacher who accompanied the trip added, “By going on this history field trip, students get physically active and are learning in a fun atmosphere. To bring what is studied in class by visiting these sites makes much more sense than reading books. ”
While we were in Germany, I encountered many school trips from all over the world; from Europe, USA, Japan just to name a few. But there was only one school from China-ULC students. My own understanding of such trips is not only limited to learning subject knowledge, our students also explore new culture and traditions and they are more adaptable and tolerant to differences. “
Angelina Wang, a grade 12 student shared her feelings of the trip, “Learning history through books and information online has always seemed enough to rouse strong feelings for what happened in the past. But truly being there is another thing, it took it to another level. I felt I could breathe the air from decades, centuries ago. I felt the ghosts walking past me. I felt a deep reverence for the past. When you read the books, you read about history. But when you are actually at that place, you are able to feel it, touch it, and relive it. That’s why we travel and that’s the better way to commemorate the past. At last, as I said on my Instagram: history has left its mark on Germany. This country acknowledges the past and embraces a brighter future. It’s been a wonderful and meaningful trip. Thank you so much!”
